The song of the month is The Beer by Kimya Dawson.
Lately I’ve been listening to this song on repeat cuz I just can’t get over how good it is. For ages I couldn’t work out exactly what it is that I love about it but I think I know now.
Darker than most of Dawson’s uplifting ditties, ‘The Beer’ tackles her emotions at the worst time in her life.
The lyrics are even more inportant than ever in this song.
My favourites are:
“I ate every single one without noticing the mold you said you’re gross my darling, I said no I’m rock and roll
The christians gave me comic books as if I would be
scared of burning in hell well I was already there
You can be a teenager for your whole fucking life
just find some pretty sucker and make that bitch your wife
First I cried for him and then I cried for me
haunted by the ghost of the girl I used to be”
Here’s a live version of ‘The Beer’ at Antifolk #2, Mains D’oeuvres in 2002 and a another version below.
